Vietnamese lawyer Nguyen Van Dai (Photo) and his assistant Le Thu Ha are detained since December 16, 2015. The official accusation is “conducting propaganda against the Socialist State of Vietnam”. If convicted they face a up to 20 years in prison.
The real reason for the arrest is: Nguyen Van Dai advocated for the respect of human rights in Vietnam and provided legal assistance to Christians and members of other religious minorities in Vietnam.
Nguyen Van Dai had been imprisoned between 2007 and 2011, and then under house arrest until March 2015. Since his actual arrest, he is held in incommunicado detention.

Since December 16, 2015, the Vietnamese citizen and lawyer Nguyễn Văn Đài is being held in prison. He is charged under Article 88 of the Vietnamese Penal Code of “conducting propaganda against the Socialist State of Vietnam”. This is not true and is a false accusation. In our opinion, Nguyễn Văn Đài is imprisoned solely for his peaceful commitment to human rights.We therefore ask you to immediately release Nguyễn Văn Đài and his assistant, Lê Thu Hà, as well as to ensure that they are treated in compliance with the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, and have full access to their lawyers, families and necessary medical treatments.

With the petition for Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thu Ha,VETO! is supporting the Member of the German Bundestag Marie-Luise Dött and the International Catholic Missionary Work Missio Aachen. In January 2016, Marie-Luise Dött took over the parliamentary sponsorship for Nguyen Van Dai and since then, has been working for his release. Missio has also launched a similar petition for the two Vietnamese human rights defenders.
